VolunTourism

What's wrong with this picture?

Voluntourism is when people, often Westerners, travel to other countries to “do good.” People often engage in voluntourism with good intentions; however, end up harming the local community whether they are unskilled or not know any better.

We seek to inform people about the effects of voluntourism on local communities and provide a list of organizations that are currently working on relevant projects.

Often times, volunteers will enter a work sight with little to no prior experience and still proceed to help out because they feel the need to give back and to help those in need. Although this can be a time of gaining knowledge and experience, when an unskilled laborer takes action on a labor intensive project it can cause the project to fall apart and/or create chaos within the local community. Little do these volunteers know that any help is still valued and there is more to do than to be "hands on".
